KL Open 2010 is over – Players depart for airport

image

The bus arrives at KL Sentral station where you can catch the express train to KLIA (about 30 minutes journey).
GM Saidali gets off the bus that took him from the Olympic Hotel (KL Open playing venue) and takes down one luggage .

image

Meanwhile, GM Marat also gets off the bus.

imageimage

Both Saidali and Marat are close friends. They travel to most tournaments together.
However today, they are not leaving for the airport together. Only Marat is heading to KLIA.

Saidali, on the other hand, is staying back.

  image image

That’s because GM Saidali has yet another chess event to participate in. It’s the UKM Masters which is a round robin event consisting of 10 participants.

One of Malaysia’s strongest players, Dr FM Nicholas Chan will be taking part with the aim of securing his first IM norm. Nicholas failed to get an IM norm in the KL Open but came within a hair's breath of achieving it. He played a few 1900+ players in the open which killed his performance rating. He needed a performance rating minimum of 2450 but he only achieved 2411. He met the other requirements of playing 5 titled players.

First game to conclude, championship decided

9am sharp. Clocks are started but since zero start is not enforced, some participants are a few minutes late.

Megaranto fills in his scoresheet as he starts the clock.

Photographers take the chance to get individual photos of players waiting for their opponents. Including Chessbase correspondence Yana Melnikova (in the background). She is also taking part in the event.

Back at board 1, Hou Yifan finally arrives but only 5 minutes late.

Chief Arbiter, Luxman, sensed there may be a high chance of quick draws reminded the players the 30 rule move requirement before a draw can be mutually agreed to.

Hou Yifan opened with 1.e4 and the game went into a Ruy Lopez.

20 minutes later, board 1 drew !!

image

It was even drawn before 30 moves. It seemed that there are other ways of drawing :)

The players drew via 3 fold repetition!

With 7½/9 Hou Yifan is KL Open 2010 champion !!

Hou Yifan Meets Megaranto In Final Round, KL Open 2010

Here are the round 9 pairings of the Kuala Lumpur Chess Open 2010 for tomorrow morning, 9 am, 12th April 2010.
image
Hou Yifan will finish the tournament by facing off with Indonesian GM Megaranto Susanto who has six points, trailing by a full point behind, Hou Yifan. Her domination in this tournament is complete if she either draws or wins against Megaranto. Hou Yifan  has stayed at the top  board throughout this tournament,  except for the first round, her favourite table, it seems.

Hou Yifan Wins In Round 8!

11th April 2010, Kuala Lumpur - Tonight Hou Yifan beats Marat to win the 8th round at the Kuala Lumpur Chess Open Championship 2010. With an unstoppable c-pawn about to queen and the white king very exposed, his two pieces (bishop and knight) were about to fall, white resigned.

Pix 1. Marat (left) – Hou Yifan, Round 8, KL Open 2010, top board.
However, earlier on Marat avoided a mating attack at the expense of further exposing his king and losing the exchange with his back rank rook. White's queen-side pawn storm lost steam as Hou continually checked the white king to pile the pressure on the white king. With no checking attacks for white and in a hopeless position, white resigned.
GM Hou Yifan is now destined to be the champion of the Kuala Lumpur Open 2010. Nobody is in sight of nearly challenging her commanding 7.0 points lead going into the final ninth round tomorrow morning, 12th April 2010.

2 wins today for Hou Yifan

Hou Yifan had two wins a row today. She beat Dimakiling this morning using the White pieces.

Marat extends his hands in resignation giving Hou Yifan giving her an unassailable 7/8 going into the final round. This win practically gives her the championship for the KL Open 2010. Tomorrow’s fight will be at the lower boards for 2nd prize onwards.

Hou Yifan Dominates KL Open 2010

11th April 2010 - Here at the Olympic Sports Hotel, Kuala Lumpur, the dynamic Hou Yifan of China won her seventh round game against Filipino IM Dimakiling Oliver. This makes her the outright leader with 6 points out of seven rounds.

image

Hou Yifan (picture above) still has to maintain two more rounds of good score to withstand the chasing pack behind her. The tournament’s top seed, GM Mchedishvili, drew his seventh round game against IM Swapnil while GM Nguyen drew his. GM Luther Thomas lost his game on the third board against GM Meganranto of Indonesia. Having all the five pointer players faltering by the wayside, allows GM Hou Yifan to be the outright leader going into the eighth round of the Kuala Lumpur Chess Open 2010.

Simultaneous Chess Exhibition By GM Nigel Short

In conjunction with the Kuala Lumpur Chess Open 2010, a simultaneous chess exhibition was conducted by a well-known grandmaster on Saturday afternoon. Here are a few pictures of the simultaneous chess exhibition given by GM Nigel Short, England at the tournament hall of the Kuala Lumpur Chess Open 2010 on the afternoon of 10th April 2010.
There were ten chess boards on the L-shaped table. By the time, I arrived, two tables were done, leaving eight players playing against Nigel Short. The last table to finish was Table 10 where Abdul Haq Mohamed was a piece ahead of Nigel Short. In the end, a draw was agreed by both players and my guess is the overall score for Nigel was 9.5:0.5. Excellent score, I would say.
